Dark reddish-purple powder. Soluble in water, the aqueous solution turns reddish-purple. Adding concentrated hydrochloric acid turns it reddish-red; adding concentrated sodium hydroxide solution turns it blue. Soluble in ethanol, it turns reddish-purple.
