Under argon protection, 560 mg (2.17 mmol) of ethyl 3-(6-bromopyridin-3-yl)propionate and 94.6 mg (4.34 mmol) of lithium borohydride were dissolved in 40 mL of tetrahydrofuran and the reaction was stirred for 3 hr at 40 °C. After completion of the reaction, the mixture was cooled to room temperature and hydrolyzed by careful addition of water. The precipitate was removed by filtration and the filtrate was concentrated and mixed with water and ethyl acetate. The organic phase was separated, washed with water and concentrated to give the target product 3-(6-bromopyridin-3-yl)propan-1-ol 450 mg in 96% yield. Mass spectrometry analysis showed M + H+ = 216.1.
