Lithium, (3-chloro-1-propynyl)- can undergo addition/substitution reactions with electrophiles; its adducts with organoboranes are good sources of allenes, enynes, alkenes, and alkynes. | [Preparation]
1.6 M methyllithium (20 mmol) was dissolved in diethyl ether and added to a solution of freshly distilled propargyl chloride (20 mmol) in THF (10 mL) at -70 °C. Lithium, (3-chloro-1-propynyl)- was used directly. It has been reported that the use of n-butyllithium instead of MeLi results in lower yields in subsequent reactions. | [storage]
Highly moisture sensitive; use soon after preparation, in a fume hood. |
