Intermediate in the production of Gallic Acid derivatives. | [Synthesis]
Benzyl bromide (4.4 g, 25.7 mmol) was added dropwise to a stirred solution of methyl 3,4,5-trihydroxybenzoate (0.94 g, 5.15 mmol) and potassium carbonate (6.56 g, 25.7 mmol) in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF, 20 mL). The reaction mixture was stirred under nitrogen (N2) protection in an oil bath at 60 °C for 15 hours. Upon completion of the reaction, the reaction was quenched by adding an appropriate amount of water to the mixture and extracted with chloroform (3 × 20 mL). The organic phases were combined, washed with saturated brine, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, filtered and concentrated under reduced pressure to afford methyl 3,4,5-tris(benzyloxy)benzoate (1.93 g, 90% yield) as a white solid. | [References]
