General procedure for the synthesis of 2-(chloromethyl)-5-methylpyridine hydrochloride from 2-(hydroxymethyl)-5-methylpyridine: (5-methylpyridin-2-yl)methanol (2-(hydroxymethyl)-5-methylpyridine) was dissolved in SOCl2 (10 mL) and the reaction was carried out at reflux for 30 min. After completion of the reaction, the mixture was concentrated and dried under vacuum to give 2-(chloromethyl)-5-methylpyridine hydrochloride (2.1 g, 91.3% yield) as a white solid.LCMS showed MH+ of 142. | [References]
