[Production Methods]

Imazaquin-methyl is obtained by first producing and purifying technical-grade imazaquin through the established multistep heterocyclic synthesis used for imidazolinone herbicides, in which the quinoline and imidazolinone fragments are built separately and then coupled to form the active acid. Once the acid is isolated to specification, it is converted into the methyl ester through an esterification step with methanol in the presence of an appropriate catalyst, with water removal used to drive the equilibrium toward ester formation. The crude ester is then washed to remove residual catalyst and unreacted alcohol, refined, often under reduced pressure, to meet technical purity requirements.
[Mechanism of action]

Selective, systemic absorbed by roots and foliage. Inhibits plant amino acid synthesis - acetohydroxyacid synthase AHAS.
[Pesticide Type]

Herbicide; Plant Growth Regulator
