GENERAL METHOD: 1-methyl-3,5-dinitro-1H-pyridin-2-one (50 mg, 0.25 mmol) was dissolved in ethanol (5 mL), followed by cyclopentanone (26 μL, 0.25 mmol) and ammonium acetate (289 mg, 3.75 mmol). The reaction mixture was heated in an oil bath at 65 °C for 24 hours. After completion of the reaction, the solvent was removed by rotary evaporation and the residue was washed with benzene (3 × 10 mL) to afford 3-nitro-6,7-dihydro-5-hydro-cyclopenta[b]pyridine (42 mg, 0.24 mmol, 95% yield) as a yellow powder. The reaction of other ketones with 1-methyl-3,5-dinitro-1H-pyridin-2-one was carried out according to similar conditions. When microwave heating was used, the reaction conditions were the same as described above. | [References]
