Preparative Example 36: Preparation of methyl 6-amino-2-methylnicotinate [0248] 6-Amino-2-methyl-3-pyridinecarboxylic acid (1.00 g) was suspended in methanol (15 mL) and concentrated sulfuric acid (0.5 mL) was added. The reaction mixture was heated and stirred under reflux conditions for 18 hours. Upon completion of the reaction, the reaction mixture was cooled, neutralized with sodium hydroxide solution and subsequently extracted with chloroform. The organic layer was washed with saturated sodium chloride solution, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate and the solvent was concentrated under reduced pressure to give the target product methyl 6-amino-2-methylnicotinate (0.82 g). Mass spectrum (ESI) m/z: 167 (M + H)+.
