Biological Activity

Lysophosphatidylcholine acyltransferase 2 catalyzes PAF (platelet-activating factor) biosynthesis from 1-O-alkyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine in the remodeling pathway. It is also involved in the synthesis of glycerophospholipid precursors from arachidonyl-CoA and lysophosphatidylcholine. It converts lyso-PAF to 1-O-alkyl-2-acyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (PC), a major component of cell membranes and a PAF precursor. Its expression is induced by bacterial infection but not by viral infection. It plays a role in membrane biogenesis, membrane homeostasis of inflammatory cells. It utilizes acetyl-CoA to product PAF on acute inflammatory stimulation with lipopolysaccharide. The enzyme undergoes p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK)-dependent phosphorylation and activation. Its activity is calcium-dependent.
