Dehalococcoides ethenogenes
had a very complex nutrition, requiring acetate, vitamin
B12, and extracts of mixed cultures containing it for its
growth.

Of many substrates tested, Dehalococcoides ethenogenes used only H2 as an
electron donor and only chloroethenes or 1,2-dichlorothane
(DCA), which it reduces primarily to ethene, as electron
acceptors. Conversion of VC to ethene is the rate-limiting
step, and subsequent results (32) showed that it cannot
grow using VC or trans-DCE as electron acceptors.
