A pyrrolizidine alkaloid, neopetasitenine occurs in Petasites japonicus Maxim. It has the structure given above which is based upon chemical interconversions and spectroscopic evidence. The alkaloid possesses strong hepatotoxic activity in common with most of the pyrrolizidine bases.
