It has several important functions in the synthesis of metallic nanostructure. Oleylamine can simultaneously function as a solvent for the reaction mixture and stabilizing agent for metallic nanostructures. In addition, oleylamine has a boiling point of 364 °C; therefore, it can be used to synthesize metallic nanostructures at high temperatures.
