It is composed of an extracellular region containing the Ig-like domain and a cytoplasmic tail. It has a transmembrane region of 33 amino acids followed by a cytoplasmic tail. It is expressed on myeloid cells such as, macrophages found in tissue and dendritic cells, on microglial cells in the brain. | | Biochem/physiol Actions | TREM2 (triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells 2) is involved in bacterial phagocytosis and regulation of inflammatory response. Its presence in microglia helps to remove the neural debris i.e. amyloid β peptide (Aβ) on microglia. TREM2 suppresses the ability of microglia to phagocytize Aβ, and disturbs the pro-inflammatory activity of these cells. Parkinson′s disease (PD) is portrayed by the degeneration of dopaminergic neurons, in the substantia nigra standards compacta district of the cerebrum.
