| | BENZYLHYDRAZINE DIHYDROCHLORIDE Usage And Synthesis |
| Chemical Properties | slightly yellow to beige powder | | Uses | Benzylhydrazine dihydrochloride is an important raw material and intermediate used in organic synthesis, pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals and dyestuff fields. | | Safety Profile | Poison by intraperitoneal route.Questionable carcinogen with experimental neoplastigenicdata. When heated to decomposition it emits very toxicfumes of HCl and NOx. | | Synthesis | Step 1: Tert-butyl hydrazinecarboxylate was reacted in acetone with MgSO4 and HOAc. The mixture was heated to reflux. After cooling and filtration, concentration gave a white solid (1). Step 2: Compound (1) was dissolved in toluene with solid KOH and a phase-transfer catalyst. Benzyl bromide was added at 50C. The temperature was then raised to 80C. After completion, the mixture was washed, dried, and concentrated to give an oil (2f). Step 3: 2N HCl was added to a THF solution of (2f). The mixture was heated at reflux. After concentration and drying, the dihydrochloride salt (3f) was obtained by filtration. |
