| | 2-Chloro-4-methylaniline Usage And Synthesis |
| Description | 2-Chloro-4-methylaniline was used in determination of aniline derivatives in environmental water samples using on-line combination of supported liquid membrane extraction and liquid chromatography. It was also used in determination of amines in environmental water samples by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. It is an intermediate used to prepare reverse transcriptase inhibitors of HIV-1.
| | Chemical Properties | clear yellow to pale brown liquid | | Chemical Properties | The chloromethylanilines are colorless or
white crystalline solids or liquids, some have a mild
fishy odor. | | Uses | 2-Chloro-4-methylaniline is an intermediate used to prepare reverse transcriptase inhibitors of HIV-1. | | Uses | 2-Chloro-4-methylaniline was used in determination of aniline derivatives in environmental water samples using on-line combination of supported liquid membrane extraction and liquid chromatography. It was also used in determination of amines in environmental water samples by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. | | Safety Profile | Poison by ingestion. A
severe eye and skin irritant. Mutation data
reported. When heated to decomposition it
emits toxic fumes of Cland NOx. See also
other chloro toluidine entries. | | Synthesis | The substrate 3-chloro-4-nitrotoluene was dissolved in MeOH (HPLC grade, 0.1 M). At room temperature in the presence of 0.5 mol% SiliaCat
Hydrogenation was carried out in the presence of Pd0. The resulting mixture was degassed twice, replacing the vacuum with H2 each time. The reaction mixture was attached to a hydrogen balloon. The reaction mixture was stirred for 2 hours. The catalyst was recovered by filtration. Rinse with MeOH and dry under vacuum. The filtrate was concentrated by GC/MS analysis to give the product. | | Potential Exposure | Most of the isomers are used in dyestuff manufacture. The 3-chloro-para isomer is used to kill
birds. It is marketed as pelleted bait for control of bird
populations. | | Shipping | UN2239 Chlorotoluidines, solid, Hazard Class:
