YTTERBIUM CHLORIDE Usage And Synthesis
Chemical PropertiesWhite powder; very soluble in water; hygroscopic.
Chemical PropertiesChemical element symbol Yb, at. no. 70, at. wt. 173.04, thirteenth in the Lanthanide Series in the periodic table. Elemental ytterbium has a face-centered cubic crystal structure at 25 °C. The pure metallic ytterbium is silver-gray in color and is stable in moist or dry air up to 200 °C, after which oxidation occurs. The metal is readily dissolved by dilute and concentrated mineral acids. The metal dissolves in liquid NH3 to yield a dark-blue color.
Occurrenceproperties of ytterbium are given under Rare-Earth Elements andMetals. The principal sources of ytterbium are euxenite, gadolinite, monazite, and xenotime, the latter being the most important. Ytterbium is separated from a mixture of yttrium and the heavy Lanthanides by using the sodium amalgam reduction technique. Ytterbium metal is obtained by heating a mixture of lanthanum metal and ytterbium oxide under high vacuum. The ytterbium sublimes and is collected on condenser plates whereas the lanthanum is oxidized to the sesquioxide.
UsesTo date, the major uses of ytterbium have been in applied and fundamental research. The element and its compounds have been used in magnetic “bubble” domain devices (ytterbium orthoferrite), in phosphors to convert infrared to visible light, in lasers, and radioisotope 169Yb has found application in portable industrial and medical radiographic units.
Safety ProfilePoison by intraperitoneal route. Mtldly toxic by ingestion. An experimental teratogen. A skin and eye irritant. When heated to SYN: YTTERBIUM TRICHLORIDE decomposition it emits toxic fumes of Cl-. See also YITERBIUM, RARE EARTHS, and CHLORIDES.
