2-Phenyl-2-propylbenzodithiolate is a reactive chemical with a number of industrial uses, including as a dye in the textile industry and as a fluorescence probe. 2-Phenyl-2-propylbenzodithiolate binds to metal ions and forms stable complexes that are not easily hydrolyzed. It has been used to detect the presence of zinc ions in cell culture media using FTIR spectroscopy. The product can also be used for synchronous fluorescence measurements, which can be used for kinetic studies. 2-Phenyl-2-propylbenzodithiolate is synthesized by the reaction of phenylmercury dibromide with 2-(2'-chlorophenoxy)ethyl acetate in an organic solvent such as cyclohexane.
