The main application of Imidocarb dipropionate is against diseases caused by parasites of the genus Babesia and Anaplasma (formerly Ehrlichia), which are primarily transmitted by ticks.
1. Babesiosis (also known as Tick Fever or Piroplasmosis)
Target Animals: Cattle, dogs, and horses.
How it works: Babesia parasites infect and destroy red blood cells, leading to severe anemia, high fever, hemoglobinuria (reddish-brown urine), jaundice, and often death if untreated.
Imidocarb's Role: It is babesicidal, meaning it kills the Babesia parasites. It is effective against various species, including:
Babesia bovis and Babesia bigemina in cattle.
Babesia canis and Babesia gibsoni in dogs.
Babesia caballi in horses.
Usage: It is used both for treatment of active infections and as a prophylactic (preventative) measure. When administered prophylactically, it can provide protection against infection for several weeks.
2. Anaplasmosis (formerly Ehrlichiosis)
Target Animals: Primarily cattle.
How it works: Anaplasma marginale is the primary species. It infects red blood cells, leading to anemia, fever, weight loss, abortion in pregnant animals, and can be fatal.
Imidocarb's Role: It is effective in clearing the Anaplasma infection from the bloodstream. It is often a key tool in managing anaplasmosis outbreaks in herds.
Mechanism of Action
