First Aid MeasuresBack to Contents
【Ingestion】

Do not induce emesis. Activated charcoal: administer charcoal as a slurry (240 ml water/30 g charcoal). Usual dose: 25 to 100 g in adults/adolescents.
【Inhalation】

If symptoms develop, move individual away from exposure and into fresh air. If symptoms persist, seek medical attention. If breathing is difficult, administer oxygen. Keep person warm and quiet; seek immediate medical attention.
【Skin】

Remove contaminated clothing. Wash exposed area with soap and water. If symptoms persist, seek medical attention. Launder clothing before reuse.
【Eyes】

If symptoms develop, immediately move individual away from exposure and into fresh air. Flush eyes gently with water for at least 15 minutes while holding eyelids apart; seek immediate medical attention.
Handling and StorageBack to Contents
【Storage】

Keep in a cool, dry, dark location in a tightly sealed container or cylinder. Keep away from incompatible materials, ignition sources and untrained individuals. Secure and label area. Protect containers/cylinders from physical damage.
【Handling】

All chemicals should be considered hazardous. Avoid direct physical contact. Use appropriate, approved safety equipment. Untrained individuals should not handle this chemical or its container. Handling should occur in a chemical fume hood.
Hazards IdentificationBack to Contents
【Inhalation】

Tachypnea, dyspnea, and hyperpnea may occur early. Hypoventilation leading to apnea and cyanosis may be seen late in the course. Noncardiogenic pulmonary edema may develop.
【Eyes】

Eye irritation may be seen. Dilated pupils and equally red retinal arteries and veins may be seen.
【Ingestion】

Nausea and vomiting may occur.
【Hazards】

Toxic gas (hydrogen chloride) is released when the compound is heated above 266F. When heated to decomposition, it emits very toxic fumes of chlorine- containing compounds and nitrogen oxides. Avoid heat.

Exposure Controls/Personal ProtectionBack to Contents
【Personal Protection】

Wear appropriate equipment to prevent: any possibility of skin contact. Wear eye protection to prevent: any possibility of eye contact. The following equipment should be available: eyewash, quick drench. Cyanides
【Respirators】

Use NIOSH/MSHA approved respirator appropriate for exposure of concern.
【Exposure Effects】

Hyperpnea, rapid breathing, hypoventilation and apnea occur with cyanide poisoning. Rapid heart rate and elevated blood pressure, followed by low heart rate and abnormally low blood pressure are also signs of cyanide poisoning. Agitation, headache, anxiety, coma, and convulsions may be seen. No reproductive studies were found for 3-chloropropionitrile. Related nitrile compounds have been teratogenic in experimental animals.
Fire Fighting MeasuresBack to Contents
【Flash Point】

76
【Fire Fighting】

(Non-Specific -- Propionitrile) Wear positive pressure breathing apparatus and special protective clothing. Isolate for 1/2 mile in all directions if tank car or truck is involved in fire.Alcohol foam is recommended, but water spray can be used because the material can be cooled below its flash point.
【Fire Potential】

Moderately flammable. Has been assigned an NFPA flammability hazard ranking of 2.
Accidental Release MeasuresBack to Contents
【Small spills/leaks】

(Non-Specific -- Propionitrile) Do not touch spilled material; stop leak if you can do so without risk. Use water spray to reduce vapors. Absorb small spills with sand or other noncombustible absorbent material. Dike far ahead of spill for later disposal. Isolate hazard area and deny entry. Stay upwind.
