First Aid Measures | Back to Contents | 【Ingestion】
Emesis not recommended - inducing vomiting is not indicated due to this chemical's irritant properties. Dilution - following ingestion and/or prior to gastric evacuation, immediately dilute with 4 to 8 ounces (120 to 240 ml) of milk or water (not to exceed 15 ml/kg in a child). Gastric lavage/precautions | 【Inhalation】
Move patient to fresh air. Monitor for respiratory distress. If cough or difficulty breathing develops, evaluate for respiratory tract irritation, bronchitis, or pneumonitis. Administer oxygen and assist ventilation as required. Treat bronchospasm with beta2 agonist and corticosteroid aerosols. | 【Skin】
Remove contaminated clothing and wash exposed area thoroughly with soap and water. A physician should examine the area if irritation or pain persists. Treat dermal irritation or burns with standard topical therapy. Patients developing dermal hypersensitivity reactions may require treatment with systemic or topical corticosteroids or antihistamines. | 【Eyes】
Irrigate exposed eyes with copious amounts of tepid water for at least 15 minutes. If irritation, pain, swelling, lacrimation, or photophobia persist, the patient should be seen in a health care facility. |
Handling and Storage | Back to Contents | 【Storage】
Keep in a cool, dry, dark location in a tightly sealed container or cylinder. Keep away from incompatible materials, ignition sources and untrained individuals. Secure and label area. Protect containers/cylinders from physical damage. | 【Handling】
All chemicals should be considered hazardous. Avoid direct physical contact. Use appropriate, approved safety equipment. Untrained individuals should not handle this chemical or its container. Handling should occur in a chemical fume hood. |
Hazards Identification | Back to Contents | 【Ingestion】
Ingestion may cause burns of the esophagus or gastrointestinal tract. | 【Inhalation】
The irritation may be only mild enough to cause cough and dyspnea, or may cause noncardiogenic pulmonary edema and lung tissue destruction. | 【Skin】
Dermal irritation, burns, and sensitization may occur. | 【Eyes】
See Inhalation. | 【Hazards】
Extremely dangerous; this chemical has exploded while stored in refrigerator. Vapor explosion hazard indoors, outdoors or in sewers. Runoff to sewer may create fire or explosion hazard. Like other chlorides, when heated to decomposition or on contact with acids or acrid fumes, they evolve highly toxic chloride fumes. Reacts violently with phosgene. Unstable, avoid phosgene | 【UN (DOT)】

Fire Fighting Measures | Back to Contents | 【Flash Point】
20 (closed cup) | 【Autoignition】
>500 | 【Fire Fighting】
Isolate for 1/2 mile in all directions if tank car or truck is involved in fire.Keep unnecessary people away and isolate hazard area. Stay upwind and keep out of low areas. Wear self-contained (positive pressure if available) breathing apparatus and full protective clothing. For small fires, use dry chemical, carbon dioxide, water spray or foam. For large fires, use water spray, fog or foam. Do not get water inside container. Cool containers exposed to flame with water until well after fire is out. Withdraw immediately in case of rising sound from venting safety device or any discoloration of tank due to fire. | 【Upper exp. limit】
15 | 【Lower exp. limit】
4 | 【Fire Potential】
HIGHLY FLAMMABLE: Will be easily ignited by heat, sparks or flames. |
Accidental Release Measures | Back to Contents | 【Small spills/leaks】
Keep sparks, flames, and other sources of ignition away. Keep material out of water sources and sewers. Build dikes to contain flow as necessary. Attempt to stop leak if without undue personnel hazard. Use water spray to knock-down vapors. |
Stability and Reactivity | Back to Contents | 【Incompatibilities】
Attacks many metals especially in humid atmosphere May react vigorously or explosively | 【Stability】
Hydrolyzes readily in the presence of water or moist air. | 【Decomposition】
May explode on heating. Decomposes on heating or on contact with acids producing toxic and corrosive fumes including chlorine and phosgene. | 【Combustion Products】
Fire will produce irritating, corrosive and/or toxic gases. |
