薁磺酸钠不稳定，受光照，空气氧化和高温环境下会分解，易脱去磺酸基。根据现有报道，薁磺酸钠含有半个或一个结晶水均是常见情况。应用薁磺酸钠是洋甘菊花的有效成分，具有很强的抗胃蛋白酶、消炎、抗菌、抗过敏、促进粘膜新城代谢的作用，主要用于研究十二指肠溃疡，胃溃疡和胃炎。作用机制薁磺酸钠通过局部直接作用抑制炎性细胞释放组胺；增加粘膜内前列腺素E2的合成，促进肉芽形成和上皮细胞新生；并能降低胃蛋白酶的活性。生物活性Sodiumgualenate(Guaiazulenesulfonatesodium)是桂皮烯的亲水性衍生物，具有优良的抗炎和愈伤作用，主要用于研究十二指肠溃疡，胃溃疡和胃炎。
体外研究Sodiumgualenateisanunstablecompound,whichisgraduallydecomposedinthesolidstateatroomtemperature.Whenheated,Sodiumgualenatedecomposesalmostcompletelywithin1week.ItwasfoundthatakneadedmixtureofSodiumgualenateandcornstarch(weightratio;1:250)fortabletingwithwaterisstable.So,duringproduction,Sodiumgualenatecouldbestabilizedusingwater.SodiumgualenateslightlyinhibitsthehistaminereleasefromratperitonealmastcellsandstronglyinhibitstheleukocyteemigrationinducedbyfMLP.
Sodiumgualenatehasbeenfrequentlyusedforthetreatmentofhumangastritis.CytoprotectionisdefinedasthemainmechanismofSodiumgualenatetoprotectthemucosaofthestomachandtheantipepticactionsinvivohavealsobeenshown.
