Matrix metalloproteinase 3 (MMP3), also known as stromelysin-1. is a zinc-dependent endopeptidase involved in extracellular matrix (ECM) remodeling by degrading components like collagen, proteoglycans, and fibronectin. It plays critical roles in physiological processes such as tissue repair and pathological conditions including cancer metastasis, osteoarthritis, and inflammatory diseases. MMP3 is secreted as an inactive zymogen (pro-MMP3) and activated proteolytically, regulating cellular signaling pathways and influencing cell proliferation, apoptosis, and angiogenesis.

MMP3 antibodies are essential tools for studying its expression, localization, and activity in diseases. They are used in techniques like Western blotting, immunohistochemistry, and ELISA to quantify MMP3 levels in tissues or biological fluids, aiding in disease diagnosis and mechanistic research. In cancer, elevated MMP3 correlates with tumor invasiveness and poor prognosis, making it a potential therapeutic target. Therapeutic MMP3 antibodies aim to inhibit its enzymatic activity or block interactions with substrates, though challenges like substrate redundancy and off-target effects limit clinical translation.
