1,3-Dinitrobenzene is accessible by nitration of nitrobenzene. The reaction proceeds under acid catalysis using sulfuric acid. The directing effect of the nitro group of nitrobenzene leads to 93% of the product resulting from nitration at the meta-position. The ortho- and para-products occur in only 6% and 1%, respectively.

Take 198.6mg (1mmol) 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine and 1mmol H₂O₂, 5ml H₂O in 50ml single neck flask oil bath set 85 deg.] C, a reddish color system, TLC monitored the reaction, extracted three times with 10ml of dichloromethane while raw material disappeared, the combined organic phase was dried over anhydrous Na₂SO₄ Dried, filtered and the solvent was removed by rotary evaporation to give a white solid 155mg, yield 92%, purity 98%.
