Reaction Conditions:

Stage #1: 7-methoxy-1H-indolewith sodium hydride in N,N-dimethyl-formamide at 0; for 0.25 h;
Stage #2: benzenesulfonyl chloride in N,N-dimethyl-formamide at 0 - 20; for 2 h;Inert atmosphere;

Steps:

1.1 Step 1: Preparation of 7-methoxy-l-(phenylsulfonyl)-lH-indole

To a solution of sodium hydride (1.6 g, 40 mmol) in DMF (10 mL) was added a solution of 7-methoxy-lH-indole (1, 3 g, 20 mmol) in DMF at 0 °C, drop wise over 15 min. followed by addition of a solution of benzenesulfonyl chloride (2, 2.86 mL, 22 mmol) in DMF at 0 °C and the reaction mixture was stirred for 2 h at rt under N2atmosphere. To the reaction mixture was added ice cold water (50 mL), then the precipitate was filtered off and washed with ice cold water to obtain brown solid (3) (5.6 g, 97.5 % Yield). MS (ESI) m/z 288.1 (M+H)+.
