s27.2 Step 2: Synthesis of 1-(bromomethyl)-2-methyl-4-nitrobenzene.
To a solution of (2-methyl-4-nitrophenyl)methanol (9.0 g, 53.84 mmol) in CH2Cl2 (100.0 mL) was added PPh3 (21.2 g, 80.76 mmol) and CBr4 (26.8 g, 80.76 mmol) at 0^ . The resulting mixture was stirred at room temperature for 3 h. After the reaction was completed, the resulting mixture was concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by flash column chromatography with petroleum ether/ethyl acetate (87/13, v/v) to afford 1-(bromomethyl)-2-methyl-4-nitrobenzene (6.0 g, 48%) as a yellow solid.
