Steps:
1 ethyl 4-(4-acetyl-2-methoxy-5-nitrophenoxy)butanoate (10)
Using an ice bath, 50 mL of trifluoroacetic acid (50 mL) was cooled to 0 °C prior to the addition of ester 9 (12.8 g, 45.7 mmol). Solid NaNO3 (11.6 g, 136 mmol) was added in portions to the stirred mixture maintaining 0 °C. Upon completion the reaction was quenched with 200 mL of H2O, the resulting precipitate filtered, then dried under suction to afford the nitro arene 10 (13.8 g, 93%) as a yellow powder.1H NMR (400 MHz, CDC13) S 7.61 (s, 1H), 6.74 (s, 1H), 4.21 - 4.12 (m, 4H), 3.95 (s, 3H), 2.54 (t, J= 7.2 Hz, 2H), 2.49 (s, 3H), 2.25 - 2.16 (m, 2H), 1.27 (t, J= 7.2 Hz, 3H).
