A solution of 4-hydroxy-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-quinoline-3-carboxylic acid ethyl ester (3.85 g, 17.0 mmol) in POCI3 (17 ml) is stirred in a microwave reactor at 1209C for 1 h. The reaction mixture is poured onto ice, diluted with EtOAc, brought to neutral pH using solid Na2CO3 and 4M NaOH soln. and extracted twice with EtOAc. The combined organic layers are washed with brine, dried over Na2SO4, treated with charcoal and filtered over hyflo. The filtrate is evaporated off to yield 4-chloro-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-quinoline-3-carboxylic acid ethyl ester.
