A solution of 3-trifluoromethyl-1,2-dihydro-pyridin-2-ylamine (2.5 g, 15.2 mmol) and methyl-3-bromopyruvate (5.5 g, 30.4 mmol) in DMF (50 mL) was heated at 60° C. for 1 hour. The mixture was concentrated, ice H2O was added with rapid stirring, and the resulting precipitate filtered, washed with H2O (4×300 mL), dried under vacuum overnight to give 8-trifluoromethyl-imidazo[1,2-a]pyridine-2-carboxylic acid methyl ester (80%) as a yellow powder. MS (ESI) m/z=245 (MH+).
