The material so obtained was dissolved in methylene chloride (700 ml) and the solution was cooled to 0°C. Thionyl chloride (34.8 ml) was added dropwise whilst the mixture was cooled to 0⁰C. The resultant mixture was allowed to warm to ambient temperature and the mixture was stirred for 1 hour. The solvent was evaporated and the residual solid was triturated under diethyl ether. The resultant solid was isolated filtration. There was thus obtained 5-benzyloxy-2-chloromethylpyridine hydrochloride (115.6 g); Mass Spectrum: M+H⁺ 234.
