EXAMPLE 46 [4R]-3-(3-Acetylthio-3-benzoylpropionyl)-2,2-dimethyl-4-thiazolidinecarboxylic acid A mixture of 20.0 g. (0.17 mole) of L-cysteine and 500 ml. of acetone is refluxed for 48 hours. The mixture is filtered through a thin pad of diatomaceous earth and the filtrate is concentrated to one-half volume. Chilling and filtering gives 20.5 g. of white crystals, m.p. 133°-139° C. Recrystallization from acetone gives 16.0 g. of L-2,2-dimethylthiazolidine-4-carboxylic acid as white crystals, m.p. 139°-143° C.
