2-(3,4-difluorobenzoyl)benzoic acid (7n)
To a solution of 640 mg (4.32 mmol) phthalic anhydride in THF (20 ml) was added 1.12 g (5.18 mmol) (3,4-difluorophenyl)magnesium bromide (in situ prepared from 4-bromo-1,2-difluorobenzene and magnesium) at room temperature and refluxed for 6 h to complete reaction. And, the reaction mixture was diluted with ethyl acetate (100 ml), quenched with aqueous NH4Cl solution and washed with water and brine. The organic layer was dried over anhydrous MgSO4, filtered and concentrated under reduced pressure. The crude product was purified by passing through a short column of silica gel (ethyl acetate : n-hexane = 1 : 1) to give 7n (700 mg, 62%).
