Steps:

3 Step 3-2,3-Dimethoxy-5-nitrophenol

To a solution of (2,3-dimethoxy-5-nitro-phenyl) benzenesulfonate (2.80 g, 8.25 mmol) in methanol (28.2 mL) was added 20% potassium hydroxide solution (16.89 mL). The mixture was stirred at 50° C. for 4 hours. On completion, the reaction mixture was concentrated in vacuo to remove methanol. The residue was diluted with water (50 mL), and acidified with HCl until the pH=5-6. The mixture was then filtered, and the solid precipitate was collected and dried in vacuo to give the title compound (1.40 g, 85% yield) as a white solid. 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3) δ 7.45 (d, J=2.8 Hz, 1H), 7.34 (d, J=2.8 Hz, 1H), 5.94 (s, 1H), 3.95 (s, 3H), 3.83 (s, 3H).
