b (5-Cyanomethyl-thiophen-2-yl)-acetonitrile To a stirred solution of 15 g (82.8 mmol) 2,5-bis-chloromethyl-thiophene in 500 ml dichloromethane was added dropwise a solution of 28.5 g (182 mmol) tetraethylammonium cyanide in 100 ml dichloromethane and the reaction mixture then heated at 45° C. for 24 h. The reaction mixture was then cooled to room temperature and washed twice with water. The organic phase was dried over sodium sulphate and concentrated in vacuo. Flash chromatography (20% EtOAc/hexane) afforded 4.88 g (36%) of the title compound as a yellow oil. MS m/e (%): 162 (M+, 44), 122 ([M-CH2 CN]+, 100).
