Steps:
5.1 Step 1: 2,6-dimethyltetrahydro-2H-pyran-4-ol:
To a solution of 2,6-dimethyldihydro-2H-pyran-4(3H)-one (3 g, 23.41 mmol) in DCE (60 mL) was added sodium triacetoxyborohydride (14.88 g, 70.2 mmol) followed by the addition of acetic acid (8.1 mL, 140 mmol) and the reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 20 h. The reaction was quenched with water and extracted with Et20 (3 x 50 mL). The organics were washed with brine, dried over MgSO4 , filtered and concentrated to give the desired product 2,6-dimethyltetrahydro-2H-pyran-4-ol as a colorless oil (3 g, 23.04 mmol, 98% yield).
