Reaction Conditions:

with dimethylsulfide borane complex in tetrahydrofuran; for 3 h;Heating / reflux;

Steps:

i 2-Chloro-3-methylbenzaldehyde; (i)

To a solution OF 2-CHLORO-3-METHYLBENZOIC acid (lg, 5. 88 mmol, 1 eq) in dry THF (10 ml) under nitrogen atmosphere at 0°C was added dropwise borane-dimethyl sulphide complex (0.523 ml, 6.47 mmol, 1.1 eq). After the addition was complete the mixture was heated to reflux for 3 hours, cooled to room temperature and poured slowly into water (100 ml). The aqueous layer was extracted with DCM (5 x 100 ml) and the combined organic layers were dried (MGS04) the solvent was removed in OACUO to yield the 2- chloro-3-methylbenzylalcohol (1G, 100%) as a white solid ; 1H NMR (300 MHz, CDC13) : 8= 7.38-7. 11 (3H, m), 4.75 (2H, s) and 2.39 (3H, s).
