A mixture of 4-methylsulfonyl-2-nitrotoluene (Alfa; 4.00 g; 18.6 mmol) and platinum oxide (120 mg; 0.53 mmol) in EtOAc (200 ml.) was hydrogenated in a PARR apparatus at 5 atm for 75 minutes. The mixture was filtered through a pad of celite and the solvent was evaporated to afford the title compound as a colorless oil (3.41 g, 99%). 1H NMR (300MHz, DMSO-d6) δ [ppm] 7.16 (1 H, d, J= 7.8 Hz), 7.11 (1 H, d, J= 1.9 Hz), 6.95 (1 H, dd, J= 7.7, 1.9 Hz), 5.42 (2 H, bs), 3.07 (3 H, s), 2.12 (3 H, s). MS (ESI+): 186.1.
