A. Preparation of 3,3,5,5-tetramethyl-morpholine. STR13 3.0 g of di-(1-hydroxy-2-methyl-2-propyl)amine and 25 ml of methanesulfonic acid are placed in a round-bottomed flask and heated to 130° C. for more than 10 hr after which the reaction mixture is cooled down and added slowly to a 10% NaOH solution. The mixture is then extracted with 50 ml aliquots of methylene chloride several times, dried and concentrated. Upon distillation, a colorless oil is obtained in about 50% yield which boils at 63°-4° C./19 mm. It is found to be an excellent u-v stabilizer, as is evident from the data in Table I. Analysis by proton nuclear magnetic resonance (nmr) and field desorption (FD) mass spectroscopy confirms the structure of the oil as being 3,3,5,5-tetramethyl-morpholine.
