C. 3,3-Dimethyl-2-pyrrolidinone To a flask containing 3,3-dimethyl-2-oxo-1-pyrrolidinecarboxylic acid, 1,1-dimethylethyl ester, hydrochloride (0.5 g, 2.34 mmol, prepared as described in J. Chem. Res. (Synopsis)., 414-415 (1993)), 1N HCl in ether (15 mL) was added and the mixture stirred overnight. The solution was then evaporated and the residue driedin vacuo to provide 0.26 g (98%) of the title product of this step as a light yellow gum which solidified on standing.
