Steps:

General synthesis of arylglyoxal analogues (2a-c)
General procedure: The procedure was performed adopting literature45 with somemodifications. A mixture of hypnone derivative (1, 30 mmol) andSeO2 (3.3 g, 30 mmol) in 1,4-dioxane (50 mL) was heated underreflux for 1 h, then another 1 eq of SeO2 (3.3 g) was added to thesolution. The solution was refluxed for 2 more hours before itwas concentrated. The residue was purified by silica gel columnchromatography (Eluent: PE-EtOAc, 1:1)
