Nitrile 35 (30.17 g, 0.172 mol) was stirred with a concentrated hydrochloric acid solution (100 mL, 1.20 mol, 7 equiv) at reflux overnight. White precipitate formed as the reaction proceeded. The reaction mixture was cooled to room temperature and the solid was collected by suction filtration. The filter cake was washed several times with cold water and dried in a vacuum oven at 50 °C for 14 h. The carboxylic acid was obtained as a white solid (31.79 g, 95%) :'H NMR (300 MHz, CDCl3) No. 7.13-7. 08 (m, 2H), 6.88-6. 80 (m, 2H), 4.20 (t, J=6. 3 Hz, 2H), 2.85 (t, J=6. 3 Hz, 2H), 2.58 (q, J-7.6 Hz, 2H), 1.18 (t, J=7. 6 Hz, 3H); ESI MS m/z 193 [C11H14O3-H].
