6 Bromination of 3-bromo-4-methyl benzoic acid
3-bromo-4-methyl benzoic acid (1 Og, 46.72mmol), NBS (8. 7g,49.15mmol)) and benzoyl peroxide (0.5g,2mmol)) were suspended in CCl4 and then heated to reflux for 5hrs. After completion of the reactionwo (TLC monitoring) water was added into the reaction mixture. The organic layer was separated, dried over anhydrous sodium sulphate and concentrated in vaccuo. The crude mixture thus obtained containing 3-bromo-4-bromomethyl benzoic acid and the 3-bromo-4-dibromomethyl benzoic acid was taken directly into the next step. LC-MS (methanol, ESI): m/z =291 (M-H) and 368 (M-H)
