Steps:
3-Bromo-5,6-dihydro-7H-cyclopenta[b]pyridin-7-one (42):
To a solution of 3-bromo-6,7-dihydro-5H-cyclopenta[b]pyridin-7-ol (41, 1.52 g, 7.08 mmol) in DMSO(10 mL) was added IBX (3.96 g, 14.16 mmol). The mixture was at room temperaturefor 2 h, quenched with water (70 mL), and extracted with ethyl acetate. The organiclayers were combined, washed with brine, and concentrated. The residue was purifiedby silica gel column chromatography to afford 42 (1.27 g, 85%).
