Step 2: 3-Butoxy-4-methoxybenzoic acid[0665]To a mixed sovent of ethanol (150 mL) and water (50 mL) were added methyl 3-butoxy-4-methoxybenzoate (12.89 g, 54.16 mmol) and sodium hydroxide (6.5 g, 162.48 mmol) . The mixture was stirred at 60 for 1.5 hours and then concentrated to remove the ethanol. To the residue was added hydrochloric acid (1 M) to adjust the pH to 1. The resulting mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate (50 mL × 3) and the combined organic layers were dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate. The organic layers was concentrated to give the title compound as a white solid (12.02 g, 99) .
