Steps:

8.1 Step 1:

To the mixture of 2,3-dimethylaniline (10 g, 82.52 mmol, 10.08 mL, 1 eq) and TEA (9.19 g, 90.77 mmol, 12.63 mL, 1.1 eq) in DCM (100 mL) was added 3- chloropropanoyl chloride (10.48 g, 82.52 mmol, 7.94 mL, 1 eq) at 0 °C. The mixture was stirred at 0 °C for 1 hr. To the mixture was added H2O (50 mL). The aqueous phase was extracted with DCM (50 mL*3). The combined organic phase was washed with brine (50 mL*2), dried with Na₂SO₄, filtered and concentrated in vacuum.3-chloro-N-(2,3-dimethylphenyl)propanamide (15 g, crude) was obtained as off-white solid.
