To a stirred mixture of ethyl 2-(3-bromopyridin-2-yl)acetate (14 g, 57.3 mmol, 1.0 equiv), Zn(CN)2 (10.1 g, 86.03 mmol, 1.5 equiv) and K2CO3 (15.8 g, 114.7 mmol, 2.0 equiv) in NMP (100 mL) was added Pd(dppf)Cl2.CH2Cl2 (4.7 g, 5.73 mmol, 0.10 equiv) at 20 °C. The resulting mixture was heated to 70 °C and stirred at this temperature for 16 h under N2 atmosphere. The resulting mixture was cooled to 25 °C and quenched with water, extracted with EtOAc (100 mLx3), organic layer was combined, concentrated, the residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography to give ethyl 2-(3-cyanopyridin-2-yl)acetate (9.0 g81.8% yield) as a yellow gum. LCMS (ES) [M+1] + m/z: 191.
