Compound 14B (6.0 g, 19.5 mmol) was dissolved in EtOH (50 mL) and the resulting solution was heated to 50 °C. Silver nitrate (6.8 g, 39.9 mmol) in hot water (11 mL) was added dropwise to the warmed solution over 5 minutes. The reaction was allowed to stir at 50 °C for 50 minutes, then cooled to room temperature. The reaction mixture was poured onto 1 N HCl (25 mL) and the solid was filtered and washed with ethanol. The filtrate was concentrated in vacuo to about 30 mL and extracted with EtOAc several times. The organics were washed with brine, dried over MgSO4, filtered, then concentrated in vacuo to provide compound 14C (3.0 g, 92 %).
