Steps:
1 Step 1:
To the stirred solution of 3-hydroxybenzaldehyde (2.0 g, 13.4 mmol) and K2C03 (4.52 g, 32.74 mmol) in DMF (20 rnL), was added iso-butylbromide (3.4 g, 24.6 mmol) at rt and heated at 80 °C for 6 h. The reaction mixture was cooled to rt, diluted with water and extracted with Et20 twice. The combined organic solution was washed with water and brine, dried over anhydrous Na2S04 and concentrated in vacuo. The crude residue was purified on silica gei column (EtOAc/hexane, 0-5%) to afford 3-/sobutoxybenzaldehyde (2.2 g, 75% yield) as a pale yellow liquid: 1H NMR (300 MHz, CDCb) d 9.97 (s, 1 H), 7.44 - 7.43 (m, 2H), 7.39 - 7.37 (m, 1 H), 7.20 - 7.16 (m, 1 H), 3.78 (d, J= 6.3 Hz, 2H), 2.15 - 2.06 (m, 1 H), 1 .04 (d, J= 6.9 Hz, 6H).
