To a solution of 3- (4-Benzyloxy-3-methoxy-phenyl)-propionic acid ethyl ester (14.0 g, 45.75 mmol) was added 2N NaOH (45.75 mL, 91.5 mmol). The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 2 h, and then poured into IN HCl (150 mL) and extracted with EtOAc. The combined organic layers were dried over MgS04 and concentrated under reduced pressure to give 12.21 g of product (93%) as a white solid. 1H NMR (CDC13) : a 2. 69 (t, J= 7.8 Hz, 2H), 2.93 (t, J= 7. 5 Hz, 2H), 3.91 (s, 3H), 5.16 (s, 2H), 6.69-6. 73 (m, 2H), 6.79-6. 85 (m, 3H), 7.29-7. 45 (m, 5H).
