8.i Step (i) 3-Nitrobenzoic-2,4,5,6-d4 acid
To a stirred solution of benzoic-2,3,4,5,6-d5 acid (5.0 g, 39.32 mmol, CAS 1079-02-3, from QMX) in concentrated H2SO4 (15 mL, 3 volumes) was added concentrated HNO3 (5 mL, 1 volume) dropwise at 0 °C. The reaction mixture was slowly warmed to rt and stirred for 2 h. The mixture was slowly poured into ice-cold water (500 mL), and a precipitate was collected by suction filtration. The solid was washed with cold water and dried under reduced pressure to afford 3-nitrobenzoic-2,4,5,6-d4 acid (4.75 g, 27.77 mmol, 70% yield). 2H NMR (61.44 MHz, DMSO, traces of DMSO-d6 added) d ppm: 8.64 (s, 1D), 8.46 (s, 1D), 8.36 (s, 1D), 7.83 (s, 1D).
