4. 4-(2,3-Dimethoxyphenyl)butanoic Acid Ethyl 4-(2,3-dimethoxyphenyl)butenoate (106.4 g, 0.42 mol) and 1N sodium hydroxide (800 mL) are added to methanol (400 mL) followed by heating at reflux for 2 hours. The mixture is evaporated to an oil, which is washed with ethyl ether and acidified to pH 1 with conc. HCl. The mixture is then extracted with ethyl ether, washed with brine, dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate, and filtered. The filtrate is evaporated to a crystalline solid (90.36 g, 96% yield). NMR spectrum is consistent with structure. MS: APCI: M+1, 225.2 (M: 224.3).
